In grad school, I did research on how Japanese business practices differ from American and the Japanese will not deal with you on the business side until they have established a trusting relationship with you. Now trust in America apparently moves faster than trust in Japan because it can take many months for that trust to be established and until it is, do not even try to discuss business with the Japanese because it will not happen.
